The Eastern Washington University Press was revitalized by James McAuley and Robert Herold in 1992 by building on the foundation of university pamphlets published earlier. They created a viable literary press closely connected to the growing creative writing graduate program at the university. Over the next twelve years, the press slowly expanded and achieved a national reputation for publishing both fiction and poetry, as well as literary translations and critiques. Under Chris Howell and Scott Poole, the Press started literary prizes in poetry and short fiction, and began the Get Lit! Northwest Literary Festival in 1998. In recognition of its success, the Press is increasing its book-publishing program, especially in nonfiction and regional titles, is applying for membership in the Association of American University Presses, and is increasing its professional staff.
