"Although many Americans have heard the name Hmong, very few know anything about this group of Southeast Asian highlanders: who they are, where they came from, what role they played in the American war in Vietnam, why they left in 1975 in such large numbers, or what fates have befallen them since then. This survey of their history and culture therefore answers a keenly felt need for a study that combines comprehensive coverage with concise scope. A useful place to begin further study of this people and their history."
—C.T.Yates, Earlham College
